Chapter 1: Laying the Ground

The Great Gatsby starts off very slow. As a reader I think it starts this way so we can get  a better  picture of the  plot. Chapter 1 we learn who the great gatsby is. We find out what a horrible world the people are living in. The First Chapter really shocked me because i thought the story would start out a little faster. The background we found out about Nick hopefully will help us as we read farther into the story. I really hope we can learn some more about how Nick makes a living. The thing i'm looking most forward too is learning about the New York and the roaring twenties. These time were very fruitful for the people living in it. We learn about about the characters who the story will revolve around, however I feel that none of the characters have lives. One major event that I would like to address is Nick and Tom. Tom is a very cocky man who is almost full of himself and it is very obvious. On page 10 Nick tells Tom which bond company he works for and Tom plays dumb. This angers Nick because Tom pretends not to know the firm he works for. I feel later on though Nick will adjust to the way society reacts to him.
This quote below is a way Nick describes where he is.
"the whole town is desolate. All the cars have the left rear wheel painted black as a mourning wealth, and there's a persistent wail all night along the north shore." page 9
